Website Critiques

Three Good Sites

  1. Navy Federal
Navy Federal.org is a banking website that makes a great use of div templates and interactive links. Nothing is cluttered in terms of the content that is displayed, and when you click through different menu items there is still a consistent theme. Since the website is geared toward current banking members and prospective ones, it easy to navigate to the "sign in" and "sign up" portals.
  2. Mercer University
Although I may be a bit biased, I believe Mercer has a great website. It is easy to navigate and has a great amount of information. The menu bar is located on the right and organizes all the sections at a glance. It's easy to locate different academic departments as well as admissions. There are also many external portals that are linked to the navigation bar that are seamless integrated to the overall user experience. There are also consistent colors throughout the site that reflect the school's pride.
  3. YouTube
I chose YouTube as another example of a good site because it does a good job at displaying advertisements while still giving the visitor a cohesive experience. The advertisements don't pop up or spread over the content. They are integrated into the website itself and the videos that are available. There a navigation bar to the left that not only includes subscriber content but also user driven content.

Three Bad Sites

  1. CNN
The CNN website does a poor job at organizing the various areas of media news that it has to offer. At first glance, it is a multitude of links with only headlines and brief, if any, descriptions. The red, black, and white theme is visibly displeasing and too literal. There's an adsense advertisement at the top of the landing page that is literally contained by itself. I understand the necessity of ad sales but this is sad.
  2. Weather.com
The first noticeable thing about this page is the same adsense ad at the top. The ad tracks cookie information and displays what the user is likely to click. They are so distracting and isn't the first thing one would be drawn to if they are looking for weather statistics. Once again it is also overloaded with links and flash based content.
  3. Suzanne Collins Offical Website
Suzanne Collins is the critically acclaimed author of the Hunger Games Triology. One look at this website and you'd think we were in the 90's. This looks like a Geocities website at best. The woman has too much money to have a website jacked up like this. This is her official website. What is the theme? Why is there unorganized content? What color is that?

Week One Summary

This week I created this blog to post the progress of our weekly course work. In week one, we mostly focused on becoming familiar with the different software that the course is based around.  We use a virtual Informatics server to access a remote desktop that has all the software needed. Dreamweaver is the main program being used to create our Landing website. Once the HTML document is ready to publish, we open CoreFTP and upload it into the course folder. My website can be accessed here:

INFM322

We also read about usability and methods in regard to site interfaces and tests.
